There were some questions today (on the “interwebs” – specifically Facebook) about me blocking people.
Over the past 4 or 5 months I have begun to remove some people from my “Facebook Friends” list – and in a few cases, block them – just to clean up and simplify my personal Friends lists. Since I am also close to the maximum number of “Facebook Friends” (5,000) I have most often removed people from my Friends list to make room to be able to accept Friend requests from parents of Lead-poisoned children (people who need to be Friends with someone in any of the Facebook secret groups in order to be added to that secret group).
Blocking someone’s personal profile generally does not extend to blocking people from my pages or from my groups. HOWEVER, if people are clearly trolls, or are disrespectful, or use abusive language — directed at anyone in one of my groups or anyone on one of my pages (including abused directed at me) — I reserve the right to block them and remove them from the group or page.
I use this tool very sparingly – you have to demonstrate incivility (or outright abuse) to trigger such a heavy-handed response of being blocked from a group or page!
That said, we do appear to be living in a strange and difficult time – which seems to have had a corrosive effect on many folks’ trust/goodwill towards others; acceptance/tolerance of different perspectives; the willingness and stamina to rise to the challenges of critical thinking and scientific inquiry [identification and correction of biases, superstitions, logical fallacies, openess/encouragement of dispassionate attempts to test, disprove & debunk, and in general, open-mindedness, flexibility, humility]; conviviality; charitableness/kindness; gratitude — the list of rusty skills is growing by the day.
Thanks for being here, and thank you for keeping things civil! It has never been more urgent for each of us to find the courage and strength to heed Gandhi’s immortal plea to “be the change you wish to see in the world.”
